Slovak Republic Lies in Central Europe

December 14, 2009 by quick1587

The Slovak Republic lies in Central Europe. The central and northern Slovakia is a mountainous region. The Carpathian Mountains cross this area. Southern and eastern Slovakia is a lowland region, being an important agricultural area of the country.

The Danube River connects Slovakia with Vienna, the Rhine Main channel, and harbours at the Black sea. In 1918 the Slovaks joined the closely related Czechs to form Czechoslovakia.

Following the chaos of World War II, Czechoslovakia became a communist nation within Soviet ruled Eastern Europe. Soviet influence collapsed in 1989 and Czechoslovakia once more became free. The Slovaks and the Czechs agreed to separate peacefully on 1 January 1993.

Historic, political, and geographic factors have caused Slovakia to experience more difficulty in developing a modern market economy than some of its Central European neighbours.
The population of Slovakia is 5.5 million.

However Slovakia is one of the best countries in the region for skiers, both amateurs and experts. The two main skiing areas are the Low Tatras and the High Tatras. The Low Tatras are more pleasant if you want to avoid crowds, but the High Tatras offer more reliable snow conditions and superior facilities. The High Tatras are also blesses with high peaks such as Skalnate Pleso 1751 m and are host to several world championships. Lifts in both regions generally operate from January through March, though cross country skiing is a popular alternative.

The most important tourist resort in Slovakia is Strbske Pleso 1 355 m. It acquired its international reputation in 1970, when the World Championship in Alpine Skiing was held here. The ski stadium includes 26 km of perfectly maintained cross-country trails, two chairlifts and four T bars. Most of the terrain is equipped with the snow-making facilities. Apart from skiing you can try paragliding, winter bungee jumping, swimming, visiting sauna, fitness halls, and many other activities. Tatranska Lomnica is one of the best ski resorts in Slovakia. The highest ski altitude is almost 2 200 m.

In Tatranska Lomnica you can find two cable cars, and many smaller lifts. It is quite small, but very well organized and maintained. Zdiar is the largest ski resort in the whole of the Tatras area. Most of the tracks were planned for beginners. It is recommended for groups and families with small children. In the Stary Smokowiec town area there are three separate ski centres. The most popular one is Jakubkova Luka situated in Novy Smokowiec. Podbanske is one of the smallest of the Tatras ski resorts and is located on the western boundary of the High Tatra town area, 32 km from Stary Smokowiec and 13 km from Strbske Pleso. You can find 3 ski lifts and a mild terrain for beginners and small children.

No matter! As long as you’re looking for city’s that match the criteria below then look no further -

1) Easy to get to.

2) Have loads to see and do.

3) Great food for all budgets

4) A wide range if shopping.

5) And sights and events for culture vultures

***Here are my top 10 European City Breaks***

STOCKHOLM – My local town :-)

Amazing. Vibrant. Modern and old at the same time. Timeless and charming. Built on 14 islands where the huge and beautiful Lake Malaren joins the Baltic.

Water so pure and clean that you’ll see people salmon fishing in the middle of the city. (Except in winter when you’ll see ice skaters)

Be sure to walk the cobbled-stoned streets of Gamla Stan (old town), maybe buy an axe at the Viking shop & for sure take one of many boat trips to the local islands of the 14,000+ island archipelago. Oh, and if you’re after a mad party try the Finland boat on a spring or summer weekend crossing. Madness!

LONDON -

My previous home. Hardly needing introduction. 2000 years of history goes head to head with the modern world. Bursting at the seams with restaurants & shopping (Oxford Street and Camden for starters) Museums. Madame Tussauds wax works. The London Eye, art at the Tate Gallery, and of course any sort of nightlife you fancy.

BRUSSELS – Great beer ;-)

Fantastic architecture & numerous museums. More Michelin ***** restaurants for it’s size than any other European city. Visit the Place du Sablon for bargains galore at the weekend antiques markets.

LILLE -

European Culture Capital 2004. Crammed with designer shops lining beautiful olde worlde cobbled streets. Visit the Musee des Beaux Arts for art. Brilliant restaurants. A must is the Les Heures Bleues where global artists fill the streets & squares performing in parades, concerts and festivals on holiday weekends.

PRAGUE -

Stunning! (I’ve been here maybe 30 times) Fairytale architecture abounds – The Charles Bridge has to be seen to believed – pictures not enough but you’ll take a lot! Food from romantic candle-lit restaurants to hardcore party bars. Not as cheap as it once was but still good. If you’re adventurous try a locals bar or club – half the price you’ll pay in the main tourist ones. And take a day trip to the spa town of Karlovy Vary if you can, absolutely stunning.

AMSTERDAM -

Yes a party town and you can do all the things you’e heard :-o But if you’re gorwn up you’ll find a wonderful canals crossed city lined with gabled houses and moored up huge houseboats. Something for everyone – Intense nightlife of every type imaginable and relaxed daytime…coffees.g., Rembrandt’s house and the Van Gogh museum.

VENICE -

See the stunning Rialto Bridge, Doge’s Palace and St Mark’s Square. Venice is simply unforgettable. Quaint shops & enticing restaurants abound. And you must take a ride on a waterbus and get an ice cream! Ideal for a short break.

BARCELONA -

Just has to be done at least once. Bustling, lively and fun. Amazing Gaudi and gothic architecture. Legendary nightlife at the Olympic area and more sedate old and modern art museums. A fantastic climate too.

STRASBOURG -

A cosmopolitan, bustling French city with loads to see and do. Canals and mediaeval bridges. La Petite France, a beautiful quarter of the city with half-timbered houses in contrasting pastel shades. Spectacular views from the top of the Notre Dame cathedral.

MILAN -

See Via Montenapoleone for world leading Italian and international fashion designer studios. Great festivals throughout the year. Stunning local lakes with superb facilities for visitors. Milan Duomo, the third largest cathedral in the world. Loads of art galleries & museums.

***What about Paris and Rome and…***

OK I know I know, no Paris? Berlin? Budapest? Rome? Vienna? Well there’s the problem with a top 10 European city holiday review. All of the others – and many more besides are fantastic and should go on your list. It’s simply that the top 10 listed are this humble travellers top ten.

Adelaide is in South Australia

December 6, 2009 by quick1587

Adelaide is the capital city of the Australian state of South Australia. It is the fifth largest city in Australia, with a population of over one million. It is a coastal city beside the Southern Ocean and is situated on the Adelaide Plains, north of the Fleurieu Peninsula, between the Gulf St Vincent and the low lying Mount Lofty Ranges.

Traditionally the Great Australian Dream has been to own a house on a modest quarter acre block. The suburbs are testament to that dream and most Adelaideans live on large allotments in spacious surroundings. The suburbs have few multi storey buildings and are leafy and green. Recently, inner city townhouses have become very fashionable among those with too much money on their hands and this has led to a spate of high rise developments.

Adelaide has a Mediterranean climate. Most of the rain falls in the winter months. Rainfall is unreliable, light and infrequent in the summer. The winter has fairly reliable rainfall with June being the wettest month of the year, averaging around 80 mm. Frosts are rare and there is usually no appreciable snowfall, except at Mount Lofty and some places in the Adelaide Hills.

The Festival City with stunning architecture surrounded by sweeping gardens and green belts, beautiful churches and the vibrancy of a modern inner city. See stunning views over the city from Montefiore Hill, the delightful Torrens River and sample the best at Haighs Chocolates. Adelaide is sometimes referred to as the City of Churches.

The fountain in the northern section of the square was designed by Adelaides premier sculptor, John Dowie and has as its theme three of South Australias Rivers, Torrens, Onkaparinga and Murray.

There are many options for accommodation, either in the heart of the city or alternatively on the coast, or amongst the wonderful landscape in the Adelaide Hills. Prices vary greatly depending upon what you are looking for, but you are guaranteed to find something just right.

Kangaroo Island is one of the world’s last great unspoiled island wildernesses. Native Australian wildlife and nature abound, and many species of plant and animal that are found on Kangaroo Island are no longer seen on the Australian mainland.

With spacious boulevards and vibrant inner city districts, sophisticated architecture and lush gardens, its the perfect venue for all sorts of activities big or small.

A great place to be come and see for yourself.

International Travel Insurance is not as Costly as You Thought

December 4, 2009 by quick1587

Most of us may not be aware of the fact that most of the insurance companies do not extend their cover if we leave the shores of US for business or vacation. It implies that we do not enjoy insurance coverage for the period we are out of our country, and, should any medical emergency arise during that period, it has to be faced and borne by us alone!

This is a standard clause which is incorporated in the policies of every insurance company. So, there is no use in fretting and fuming over it. Rather, the prudent way out would be to go for international travel insurance.

These policies are basically of two varieties – the short-term travel insurance and the long-term global medical coverage. Many such policies include coverage of not only emergency medical evacuation but emergency political evacuation too. These policies also include coverage of emergency medical repatriation and reunion and are unique in the sense that they all provide global assistance and access to medical treatment anywhere around the globe including the US. So, if you are a frequent traveler or spend a reasonable period of the year outside the country, it would immensely benefit you if you take such a policy, since you need not to worry at all whether you are within the coverage or not.

These international insurance plans are available for all categories of persons including employees of multinational companies, foreign VIPs and even missionaries! The business houses and multinational corporations can also take out group international insurances for their employees who have to frequently leave the shores of their motherland.

In addition to the medial assistance, these policies also provide a variety of other related helps which a frequent traveler will gratefully acknowledge. These include assistance in getting a replacement drug if the drug prescribed by the US based doctor can not be procured for the local market. The insurance companies, in some cases, will also arrange for the dispatch of a specialist and bear all the related expenses. They will also arrange for emergency travel of relatives if it is covered under the policy and the situation so demands. Other than these assistances, the insurance companies will provide with legal and consulate referrals if the traveler faces problems of lost passport or travel documents or is unable to comprehend the local language or laws of the land. So, that more or less covers all aspects from where a frequent traveler might face some sort of problems.

It is obvious that all the frequent travelers must buy such policies and they cost a fortune either. It is indeed surprising that in spite of provide such a slew of additional benefits, they are surprisingly reasonably priced and most of them also do not require the past medical history of the person to be insured.

The International Medial Group is one of the well known insurance companies which has an immense goodwill in the field of international travelers insurance. They have a large number of policies in this category and a person can surely find the one which suits him best.

The ideal way to choose a particular policy would be the various websites available on the net which offer guidance and provide professional suggestions in this regard.

A Look At The Santa Monica Transportation Industry

December 2, 2009 by quick1587

The Santa Monica Freeway first opened in 1964 and has since become one of the busiest freeways in the entire world. This high traffic is due to the integral part that the freeway plays in providing accessibility to Los Angeles, Santa Monica, San Diego, and many points in between.

The freeway, which is legally defined as the westernmost segment of Interstate 10, begins at the western terminus of I-10 at the Pacific Coast Highway, and ends at the famed East Los Angeles Interchange. The I-10 Freeway branches off from that point and continues as the San Bernardino Freeway.

This freeway has been featured in many films and referenced in many songs and other areas of current pop culture, and continues to serve many commuters and travelers alike, connecting them to prime Southern California destinations as well as points beyond.

The Santa Monica Airport holds the distinction of being the oldest operating airport in Los Angeles County. The earliest records indicate the flights from this location took place as early as WWI, when biplane pilots utilized the then informal grass landing site known as Clover Field as a take off point. Things have definitely changed since those days, aviation has come a long way in both technology and raw transportation numbers.

The Douglas Aircraft Company, which purchased the airport in 1922, employed up to 44,000 employees during its peak years, which required the construction of housing for employees, as well as a rezoning of the perimeter of the airport to accommodate this residential housing influx. The Douglas Air Craft company was responsible for testing and building both the A 20 Havoc and A 26 Marauder, as well as the well known B 19.

Many events are hosted at the Santa Monica airport, including the Barney Warehouse sale, the Macys Dream American Express Passport Fundraiser, Dream Halloween and PAL Halloween events, The LA Arts Show, Devine Design, and the LA Antique show. In addition, the annual Asian Nights and the New Years Celebration take place at the Typhoon and the Hump, the airports on site restaurants. Many local school groups frequently visit the airport to get a firsthand look at the aviation industry as well.

Today, the Santa Monica airport is one of the busiest in the country, and contains a Santa Monica Aviation History Museum onsite, which is currently under remodel and is scheduled to reopen sometime in early 2008 and is expected to draw in even more visitors to the historic site.

A Beach Vacation: The Destinations Are Endless

November 29, 2009 by quick1587

A beach vacation is possible at any time of the year. Given the way seasons change around the world, there’s always a beach somewhere that’s full of sand, crystal clear waters, and warm sunshine. The only decisions to be made are where to go, what to do, and where to stay.

Given how popular the beach vacation is, it’s no surprise that the choice of accommodations is as varied as the colors in a setting-sun horizon. From luxury beach resorts to private huts on the shore, you’ll have your pick. Budget can help with some decisions, but for most destinations, there are enough options to accommodate your preference, no matter how much you have to spend.

As for what to do, a beach vacation is naturally the perfect opportunity to enjoy the outdoors. Recreation ideas include surfing in Waikiki, golfing in Wailea, scuba diving in Fiji, sailing in the Caribbean, or bird-watching in Australia. For those who would prefer to relax, there’s always somewhere quiet to do so. A beach vacation is a way to get away from the noise, crowds, and distractions of daily life. From tropical gardens to tidal pools to kayaking to the center of the sea, visiting the beach is definitely a “right” step towards paradise.

Deciding where to go will depend somewhat on when you plan your vacation, as well as how much you have to spend. Do you have enough to get all the way to Australia? Or will a trip to Mexico leave you with more spending cash? Planning your trip is part of the fun though, as you explore the many destinations around the world ‘ all perfect for a beach vacation. From Kauai, Hawaii, to Jamaica to Thailand to the remote Out Islands of the Bahamas, each offers the visitor something unique and memorable.

The purpose of your beach vacation will also help pinpoint where to go. For a weekend getaway for instance, you’ll likely want to stay closer to home, to cut down on travel time and leave more for relaxation, recreation, sightseeing, and fun. For a family vacation, there are certain destinations that cater to families, such as Maui and Molokai, Hawaii; Palm Beach, Florida; and San Diego, California. For the romantic beach vacation, choose from secluded villages, spa resorts, and peaceful beach rentals right on the sand.

Finally, there’s the destination wedding, where a beach vacation is the honeymoon. For many couples, there’s nothing more romantic than a beach or island wedding, with the sun setting behind them as they exchange I do’s. What’s more, after the ceremony, there’s no place to rush off to for a honeymoon as it’s right there. Guests of the wedding are also totally set to enjoy a beach vacation of their own.

Popular destinations for beach weddings include the Hawaiian islands of Kauai, Maui, Oahu, and the Big Island; Jamaica; each of the Caribbean Islands; Mexico; and Fiji. In truth however, if you’re determined, you can have a dream wedding with a beach setting most anywhere. All you need is the beach and as said, the destinations are endless!

2008 Olympic Tour Packages: An Experience of a Lifetime

November 27, 2009 by quick1587

The Olympics represent unique opportunities for sports enthusiasts and cultural ambassadors to come together to dissolve humanity’s differences and unify under the banner of goodwill and sportsmanship. The Olympics are held in even numbered years, with the Summer Olympics celebrated in years divisible by four and the Winter Olympics staged two years later.

Although the Olympics are always an exciting time, anticipation for the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing is unparalleled. China has always been an extremely powerful nation, but it is poised to become a true economic powerhouse, one that could well lead the world as the century progresses. The Chinese view the 2008 Games as the opportunity to showcase their development, while the rest of the world is intensely curious about a country, a government, and a people that seem shrouded in mystery.

Because it is largely a closed society, few Westerners have had the opportunity to visit China – until now. Indeed, this year’s Games make 2008 Olympic tour packages extremely popular, as they present a unique opportunity to experience Chinese culture and enjoy the camaraderie that accompanies this gathering of athletes and fans from around the world. For many people who love to travel, golf packages, hunting and fishing vacations, and cruises pale in comparison to the chance to become part of history as China unveils its advancements on a world stage.

When you’ve decided to embark on this adventure of a lifetime, though, how do you decide which travel operator to use? The best 2008 Olympic tour packages can be found online. Look for a travel website that offers over a dozen different China travel packages. For example, you should be able to choose from among seven-day, nine-day, ten-day, and eleven-day tours. Perhaps you’d like to limit your China visit to Beijing, and concentrate on seeing the Olympics and visiting landmarks like Tiananmen Square and the Great Wall. Maybe you’d also like to make your way to Shanghai and Suzhou, a town of canals that has been dubbed the “Venice of the East.” Extend your trip for a few days, and you could visit Nanjing to experience its rich cultural heritage, as well as Hangzhou’s Lin Ying Temple.

Choosing the right travel company is more than selecting your preferred itinerary, though. You should also ensure that the tour provides guides that speak English, and includes accommodations in four-star hotels. All transportation within China should be provided, including transportation to and from Olympic venues. Price is also a consideration, though it probably shouldn’t be the deciding factor. You can, however, expect to book a superb eleven-day 2008 Olympic tour package for under $5,000 per person.

The slogan of this summer’s Olympic games is “One World, One Dream.” If you’ve always dreamt of visiting one of the most exotic, mysterious places in the world, 2008 Olympic tour packages will give you an experience of a lifetime. Let the games begin!
